Consequences – Good or Bad

Today, I had to think about what I was going to write about for my blog. On Sundays, I like to post something more along the religious line as I do believe that there is a God and that he created our spirits. He also created this world so that we would be able to obtain a body of flesh and bones and learn what life is all about.

I believe that life was never meant to be easy or that there should be no problems. Have you ever wondered why you were faced with a problem. It doesn’t matter whether the problem was large or small. When you were a small child, your parents would look after things for you. As you grew older, they would teach you how to do things and look after yourself. Then comes the first problem that you have encountered and your parents stand back to see what you would do. This was their exam. Did they teach you about resources and how to use them? Did they teach you honesty and trustworthiness? Did they guide you for smaller decisions and let you make your own choices? Or did they try to do everything for you?

I believe that life is like getting an education. It’s not like an education in school where you learn out of books and write the exams, sometimes with actual experience, sometimes, not. It’s the type of education that you cannot learn from a book. You have to live. You can ask for help, but, in the end, the decisions are all yours.

Many people think that they can avoid the consequences of their decisions. There will always be consequences, some good and some bad. If you try to avoid the consequences, you are only postponing the inevitable. I have found that I always get caught out if I try to do something that is on the shady side. Not only have I had to face the consequences of my actions from those in authority, I also have had to live with myself and the feelings of guilt when I have done so. If I find that I have done anything to cause harm or offense to anyone, I usually try to find out what it is that I have done and try to correct the problem. Sometimes I realize what I have done before anyone realizes it and take corrective action. I also let those who need to know what I have done and what steps I took. Then I also try not to repeat that action.

We live in a world that is not perfect. There are people who are greedy and keep things for themselves that they were entrusted with for others. There are people who collect information so that they can use it against others. There are those who think that they can do what they want because of the amount of money that they have access to. There are people who do not think before they speak or act.

There are also people who would give the shirt off their own back to someone who needs it more than they do. There are people who spend a great deal of their time giving service to others. There are people who, because of physical limitations, do the best they can to help others in an intellectual area. There are people who give nothing but joy to the people around them.

Every community has both types of these people. We need to use the second group of people as our examples and try to avoid the action and influence of the first group of people. We also need to learn to uplift those around us, and help them with problems of their own. I have found that if I give service, I forget about some of the problems that I have and I also become inspired with solutions for my problems from the whisperings of the Spirit from our Father who is in Heaven.

Where is this post taking me? I really don’t know. I am meandering in my mind typing the words as they come to me. I can only hope that this post will give someone the inspiration that they have been praying for. I just know that I knew that I could not do a different type of post today. The Spirit tells me that someone out there will read this and will act on this. Heavenly Father wants to bless us. We need to do the things that have been told to us through the Scriptures and then we will receive the blessings. I know this to be the truth. When I have a problem that needs an immediate solution, I pray about it and keep a prayer in my heart as I look for the answer that Heavenly Father will give me. Sometimes, He wants me to make the decision then come to Him with the decision to see if it is the right decision. Sometimes, the problem seems to disappear when I have made the decision and acted on it, but I don’t know the outcome for a period of time. This period of time could be up to any number of years.

I also want to let people know that I do believe in Jesus Christ and that I believe that it was His decisions and actions that make it possible for me to return to my Father in Heaven. There is never a no-return point for Jesus Christ and Heavenly Father. But, now is time to learn.

Good Friday – What Does It Mean to You?

It’s Good Friday, today. It’s the beginning of the Easter weekend. I know what it means to me, but sometimes I wonder what it means to other people.

Growing up, it did not mean very much to me. It was a day off school and the beginning of a long weekend. Easter meant chocolate eggs. There was no thought about the significance of Easter. Even now, Easter isn’t Easter without chocolate.

One of my memories of Good Friday as a teenager was spending it at the home of friends of mine. My sister was also there. It just so happened that the friends were daughters of an Anglican minister who ministered to our parish. Their mother had a tradition of making hot cross buns every Good Friday and feeding them to whomever came to spend time with them on that day. Her buns were fabulous and I have absolutely no idea how many I ate that day.

Another Good Friday memory that I have from when I was much younger, is of my mother cooking fish. Fish was not very common in our house at that time. In fact, it was very rare. I have no idea why. I had asked my mother why she was cooking fish and she told me that it was because that it was Good Friday. I still did not understand why. She tried to explain it to me but I think that I might have been too young to understand.

As I grew older, I learned about what Good Friday was supposed to be about, according to the Anglican Church. At that time, however, it was a day off school, maybe go to church for an hour and then do whatever I want.

Over the years, I have learned the true meaning of Good Friday. It is not a government holiday but it is a religious holy day. It is meant to bring people together to think about and discuss the death of Jesus Christ and the Atonement that He performed for us. A great many people think that the Atonement was performed on the cross.

The Atonement as explained by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints states:
As used in the scriptures, to atone is to suffer the penalty for sins, thereby removing the effects of sin from the repentant sinner and allowing him or her to be reconciled to God. Jesus Christ was the only one capable of carrying out the Atonement for all mankind. Because of His Atonement, all people will be resurrected, and those who obey His gospel will receive the gift of eternal life with God.
As I said earlier, many people believe that the Atonement was performed on the cross. I don’t believe that it was done there, but instead, I believe that the time that Christ spent in the Garden of Gethsemane, He worked out the Atonement. As it reads in the New Testament:

39 ¶And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the  Mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him.
40 And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation.
41 And he was withdrawn from them about a stone’s
cast, kneeled down, and prayed,
42 Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup
from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.
43 And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven,
strengthening him.
44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly:
and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
Luke 22: 39 – 44

Here, it says, right in the New Testament, that Christ sweat great drops of blood. Why would this happen unless He was taking the sins of all of the people of the world, past, present, and future, and paying the price for them so that if they would only believe in Him and follow His laws, then they would be able to return to our God and live with God and Jesus Christ throughout the eternities.

Let it suffice that we can read these things in the scriptures.

Some of you may not believe the way that I do. That’s alright. It is not my place to tell you that you are wrong in your beliefs. My object in this is to present a slightly different slant than you think and ask that you think about it. I hope that you observed Good Friday in the manner that you feel comfortable with.
